Introduction

Silicon carbide (SiC) is one of the hardest synthetic materials available, second only to diamond. Grinding it requires a machine that is even tougher. Our specialized SiC fine grinding mills are engineered for this extreme duty. While most mills are rated for Mohs hardness <7, this specialized series uses advanced materials and grinding principles to process materials with a Mohs hardness of 9+. We can efficiently reduce SiC into precisely graded micro-powders for use in advanced abrasives, ceramics, and electronics, where particle size control is absolutely critical.

  • Q: Your other mills are for Mohs <7. How can this mill grind SiC at Mohs 9+?
  • A: This is an excellent question. This is not a conventional roller or ball mill. A jet mill has no grinding media (no rollers or balls). The grinding is done autogenously—by the SiC particles themselves. We use compressed air to accelerate the particles to supersonic speeds inside a chamber, causing them to collide and break apart. This is the only effective way to finely grind such hard materials without massive wear and contamination.
  • Q: What is the main operational cost of a jet mill?
  • A: The main operational cost is the energy required to produce the large volume of high-pressure compressed air that powers the mill. While the capital cost of the mill is high, it is the most effective technology for producing high-value, contamination-free micro-powders from ultra-hard materials.
