Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: My shale has a high moisture content. Is that a problem?
  • A: For Raymond mills, feed moisture should ideally be below 6%. If your shale is wetter, a pre-dryer might be required. Alternatively, for very high moisture and large capacities, our vertical roller mill system, which combines drying and grinding, would be the ideal solution.
  • Q: What is the difference between shale and slate?
  • A: Shale is a sedimentary rock formed from compacted clay and silt. Slate is a metamorphic rock that was formed from shale under heat and pressure, making it harder and more distinctly layered ("slaty cleavage"). Our mills can handle both, but the capacity might be slightly lower for the harder slate.
