Introduction

Petroleum coke (petcoke), a by-product of the oil refining process, is a high-calorific value fuel source. However, it is also highly abrasive and can be difficult to grind. Our petcoke grinding mills are specially designed to withstand this challenge. Featuring extremely durable, wear-resistant grinding components and high-pressure grinding systems, our mills efficiently pulverize both green petcoke and calcined petcoke into a fine powder for use as a fuel in cement kilns and power plants, or as a carbon source in metallurgical applications.

  • Q: Petcoke is much harder to grind than coal. How does your mill perform?
  • A: Petcoke has a very low HGI (Hardgrove Grindability Index), meaning it's difficult to grind. Our HW-series vertical mills are specifically designed for this. They use a higher grinding pressure and much more robust wear materials than a standard coal mill to ensure efficient, reliable production.
  • Q: What is the difference between grinding green petcoke and calcined petcoke?
  • A: Green petcoke is the raw product from the refinery and contains residual volatile matter. It's used as fuel. Calcined petcoke has been heat-treated to remove volatiles, making it nearly pure carbon. It's much harder and more abrasive. Our mills can be configured for either, but the wear part selection and capacity will differ.
